The Winter Music Conference 2013 held its annual International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) on Thursday, March 21. Beachmonkey had 3 photographers on site for the event, with Mike Luczaj in the back with performers and presenters, hobnobbing with some of EDM's top stars.
Nile Rodgers of Chic received the Lifetime Achievement Award and a standing ovation. Armin Van Buuren appeared to win almost everything else. But for me, the big news was that Joi Cardwell won a well deserved award for her song, “Love Somebody Else.”
Joi and Happiness
Joi’s golden voice has been featured in all kinds of songs, from the deepest house to the most tribal of Circuit tracks (“Jump for Joy”). I spoke with her after the awards “Lots of things are moving in positive ways,” she said. We didn’t have time to fully explore what she meant, so I will get the full scoop on Ms. Cardwell in the near future.
Award for Live Music at IDMA?
I also spoke with Bopa King Carré (www.bopakingcarre.com), an intense musician who believes in, for lack of a better description, “mixed media” electronic dance music that combines life performance of music with DJ performance. I asked him about having an award given to such performers, and his answer was affirmative. “There is a natural re-evolution of live music within dance music,” he said. If anyone is going to make it happen, it will be Bopa and his fellow musicians.

The big winner of the night was Armin Van Buuren, who gave a quotable that I fully endorse: “Everything that’s bad in the world,” he said, “could be solved by dancing together.”
